¿Qué tan especial es ser el primero de algo?
De todos los lugares fue en San Ángel Inn, en el terreno de una cancha de tenis, donde la primera casa especulativa de Juan O’Gorman se erigiría hacia 1931. Su mal etiquetada ópera prima, la siempre considerada más moderna de todo el continente para esa época. Habría en esos años, por supuesto, casas más modernas, aunque ninguna con una escalera así flanqueada por una barda de órganos. Después de terminar esta casa, O’Gorman, aún sin título universitario, convenció a Diego Rivera de ser su mecenas y su vecino. Fue O’Gorman quien primero incorporó a su obra los rosas tradicionales de los pueblos mexicanos y las escaleras sin barandal de la época colonial en la arquitectura moderna mexicana.
O’Gorman tenía muy buen ojo y estudiaba historia dedicadamente, no cabe duda.

Of all the places, it was at San Ángel Inn, in what used to be a tennis court, where the first speculative house of Juan O’Gorman would be erected towards 1931; his mislabeled opera prima, which has been considered the most modern in the entire continent around that time. Of course, in those years there were more modern houses, although surely none of them had a stair like that flanked by a wall of cacti. After finishing this house, O’Gorman, still without a university degree, convinced Diego Rivera of becoming his patron and neighbor. It was O’Gorman who first incorporated into his work the traditional pink tones of the popular constructions and the handrail-free stairs from the colonial period into modern Mexican architecture.
