Cine - Teatro del Centro Social y Deportivo para Trabajadores de Balbuena

1929

colonia El Parque

A long time ago, a boy sneaked into a cinema in the huge Balbuena Sports Center, unaware that a horror movie in which someone lost their head was being screened. Feeling very scared, he ran back home, to the border of Centro Histórico and the neighborhood of Morelos. That boy would never return to that movie theater, nor would he ever watch a horror movie again.

In the best sense, it is hard to label Juan Segura’s work. There should be a catalog of his architecture only for his buildings ’textures: each work has a unique one, and the multiple buildings in this sports club were no exception. In its good times, the government of the day would organize massive sports festivals at the huge sports and tracking field while; other times, there would be concerts by the National Symphonic Orchestra and several plays would be performed at the open-air theater. The sports club was a center for recreation, mostly on Sundays, developed by the DDF for workers and their families for the East side of the city. Nowadays, the sports club is perhaps half the size it used to be and Segura’s textures are sunk under several layers of cement, plaster and paint from past administrations. Its rendered walls hide numerous stories.
