El edificio La Nacional llegó a ocupar un lugar en la enorme lista de edificios que en algún momento han sido “el edificio más alto de México”. Probablemente sea el más silencioso de los iconos de la capital y quizás el que más cambios ha presenciado: desde la demolición y remodelación de su entorno inmediato, pasando por la conclusión del Teatro Nacional; la construcción de su edificio gemelo y de la torre Latinoamericana; del surgimiento de un par de líneas del metro; miles de manifestaciones y protestas, las tragedias que han acompañado a los sismos a los que ha sucumbido y resistido la ciudad - incluida la desaparición de su prima, La Mariscala.


Pero sobre todo, es el edificio chilango frente al que todos hemos pasado, antes que el rascacielos vecino, igual que millones de personas día a día. 

La Nacional came to occupy a place in the huge list of buildings that have been “Mexico’s tallest building” at some point. It is probably the quietest capital icon and possibly the witness of the most changes: from the demolition and refurbishment of its immediate surroundings to the completion of the Teatro Nacional right opposite, the construction of its twin building and the Torre Latinoamericana, the emergence of a couple of subway lines, thousands of manifestations and protests, and the tragedies that have accompanied the earthquakes to which the city has succumbed and resisted – including the destruction of its cousin and neighbouring tower, La Mariscala.      

But, above all, it is the chilango building in front of which we all have passed, even before there was a glimpse of the Latino, just like millions of people still do so day by day.
